South Pasadena Fire Department officials responded to blaze involving an Athens’ garbage truck Tuesday afternoon at about 3:45 p.m. in the 600 block of Mission Street of Mission Street. When firefighters showed up at the scene in front of the local Trader Joe’s they found the cab of the truck fully engulfed. Soon after the fire moved to the rear of the truck. “Once we got the cab extinguished, we made access to the top of the truck and flooded the back end, also using foam, until we put it out,” explained Captain Chris Saxon of the South Pasadena Fire Department. Athens officials were at the scene to determine how to proceed with the massive cleanup. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Saxon said the driver of the truck sustained minor burns as he attempted to get the fire extinguisher off the truck. The man was evaluated by paramedics and released at the scene. A battalion chief from Verdugo City Fire assisted the SPPD. Through traffic was closed between Orange Grove Avenue and Grand Avenue until the garbage truck was removed from the street.
