Before the Homes were Built Near Monterey Hills School

45

Throwback Thursday – Altos de Monterey (Monterey Hills Redevelopment Project) is the last major city redevelopment project authority in South Pasadena. All subsequent major downtown redevelopment projects on Mission Street and Fair Oaks Avenue have failed to get off the ground for the last half century. This view taken in 1962 from La Manzanita Street shows a portion of Monterey Hills after grading and streets paved. On the horizon (just to the right of the “S” curve) on Via Del Rey is the future site of Monterey Hills Elementary School. Homesite lots sold for $20,000. In 1906, a city booster slogan read “South Pasadena ‘The City of Happy Homes’.” Our city prides itself on being a predominantly neighborhood community.
