Those seeking relaxation at a Korean spa — with its unique style — no longer have to travel all the way to Koreatown. V Spa — the first Korean spa in San Gabriel Valley — opened on Oct. 19 in South Pasadena.

Mei Vieth, who owns Happy Feet Massage and GiGi Skincare in South Pas, grew tired of making the monthly trek across town to visit the Korean spas, so she hired one of the contractors from Koreatown’s popular Wi Spa to transform her old tanning salon on Fair Oaks Avenue into a modern Korean spa.

“In Korea, jimjilbang are places where people come to hang out and enjoy steam rooms, body scrubs and massages,” said Vieth, who used to live in South Korea. “You’ll find them on every corner.”

V Spa’s menu offers an array of massages and facials, and there is a salon area where guests can also have their hair done. Amenities include a clay detox sauna room, hot and cold bath and a Himalayan salt room. Guests can pay a flat rate of $25 for unlimited access to the spa’s facilities for the day.

“After customers use the salt room, they are much happier and relaxed due to the negative ions,” Vieth said. “Breathing the air and salt is good for asthma, allergies, depression and stress.”

Currently V Spa is only for women, although for New Year’s Eve, it is offering a Couples Special. Couples will have access to all of the spa facilities on New Year’s Eve from 4 p.m. to midnight and will be served red wine, champagne and dinner. The cost is $120 per couple, and the spa can accommodate 10 couples for the event, so booking in advance is strongly advised.

On Sunday, Nov. 17, V Spa is hosting an open house for the public from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tours of the spa will be offered, and Vieth will be serving homemade Korean dishes such as barbecued meat, kimchi and japchae — a popular noodle and vegetable dish.

“In the future I hope to expand and add on a men’s section,” Vieth said. “People are so happy that we are here. I’ve already had customers return multiple times in one week. One of the biggest compliments I’ve received is that we’re better than the Koreatown spas.”

V Spa is open Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is located at 1130 Fair Oaks Ave. in South Pasadena. For more information, call (626) 799-0118.
