Something different, something fun, South Pasadena Little League is introducing a new way to introduce the 2017 season.
Getting away from the traditional speeches by league representatives and dignitaries, along with the introduction of sponsors and teams that has ruled over the years, look for the league’s new format to unfold Friday night from 6-9 p.m. at Clarich Field in Arroyo Park.
Oh, there might be a thank you or two tossed around when remarks are made by league officials, but the emphasis will be on family fun as Little League Baseball and Softball looks to start the new campaign with a festive atmosphere. They cite a lack of attendance by players and parents for opening days in resent years as one of the reasons for going in a different direction this year.
Festivities will include a variety of carnival games, including a bottle flip, can knock down, bean-bag toss, pitching with a radar gun recording the speed and, of course, face painting for all ages.
There will also be raffles for baseball and softball gear, and food and drinks available, featuring hot dogs, corn on the cob, kettle corn, lemonade and water.
Topping it off will be an opening day baseball game between the boys’ division Chabot versus Betts at Nelson Field in Arroyo Park.
