The South Pasadena Review has hired as its new assistant editor the award-winning print and broadcast journalist, Steve Whitmore, who also served as the senior spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for 16 years.
Whitmore, 67, comes to the Review from the Keene Sentinel in Keene, New Hampshire, where he covered politics and wrote a column. Before that, Whitmore was the spokesperson and senior media advisor to former Sheriff Lee Baca and the department before retiring in 2016. Whitmore’s journalism career spans nearly four decades.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to work for the Review,” Whitmore said. “I love South Pasadena and am more than familiar with the area as the former publisher of the La Cañada Valley Sun and managing editor of the Glendale News-Press. I am excited to be here.”
Whitmore also said the paper, founded in 1888, has a new-found energy with owners Andy and Carie Salter, who purchased the paper about two years ago.
“We are thankful that Steve has joined our team,” South Pasadena Review Editor Harry Yadav said. “He brings a wealth of experience to the paper and a love of community journalism that is unmatched.”
Although grateful for his retirement, Whitmore said he missed newspapers and wanted to return to the workforce.
“When you love what you do, it’s not really work,” Whitmore said. “I missed the purpose and structure of community journalism.”
Along with the Valley Sun and the News-Press, Whitmore worked as a copy editor for the Los Angeles Times, and was the managing editor of the 40,000-daily circulation, Pulitzer-Prize winning, Hutchinson News in Hutchinson, Kan. He also worked in radio and television during his career, but it was community journalism that captured his heart.
“I started in newspapers by accident,” Whitmore said. “I had just graduated from college and was attempting a career that I wasn’t particularly good at. I was introduced to an editor of a community newspaper and they offered me a story. I did it and loved it. I have loved it ever since.”
Whitmore’s eldest son, Brennan, is a newspaper design editor for Gatehouse Media in Austin, Texas.
