Cody Masden

The South Pasadena varsity girls basketball team entered league competition Wednesday evening with a underwhelming 6–12 record; however, in his second year as head coach of the Tigers, 2010 SPHS graduate Cody Masden is unconcerned. “Once you can look past the actual record, which looks pretty bad on paper, and study the teams we’ve competed against heading into league, you realize our opponents thus far have just prepared us to compete harder and better in league,” he said Wednesday morning, hours before his team kicked off its league campaign with a road game at rival San Marino.

The Tigers have been led all year by their only two seniors, center Tiffany Holmes and shooting guard Naomi Krusic. Holmes is the type of player who can beat any type of defender. “If she’s guarded by a smaller girl, Tiffany will overpower her,” said Masden. “If a taller defender challenges her, Tiffany’ll blow right by her.”

Krusic’s signature is also her knack for scoring the basketball. “Sometimes you don’t know how or why she took a certain shot, but then you watch it go in,” said Masden, who likes to compare his starting shooting guard to Cleveland Cavaliers star J.R. Smith.

Masden believes the girls can run the table in league this year, after last year’s 8-2 finish saw them fall twice to league champion La Cañada. “Having played ball here myself,” said the coach, “I never saw San Marino as a threat to our basketball team, so I never worried about those games. All I ever wanted to do was beat La Cañada.”

The Tigers play the Spartans during a home match in nine days.
