When Korosh Soltani opened David Orgell San Marino in October 2017, he wanted to continue the time-honored tradition of his family’s original business—David Orgell Beverly Hills—but with an updated look and feel.
“Since I’m the younger generation in my family, I decided to make it a more modern-looking store,” Soltani said. “We mixed traditional antique style in with the design, paired grey with dark wood, and we have Persian carpets on the concrete floor. My father’s original business was in Persian carpets, so we sell them in the store.”
David Orgell’s origins date back to the late 1800s in England, where the Orgell family established a sophisticated line of luxury silver and gifts, and had a clientele list that included members of the Royal Family. In the 1940s, Spencer Orgell relocated the family business to Los Angeles, where he opened shop on Wilshire Boulevard. Later on, his son David opened his own store on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
“His family sold the business to my family in 1989, and we owned the store in Beverly Hills for 29 years,” explained Soltani. “It closed in March of last year, then in October I decided to open my own store in San Marino. Many of our customers that would come out to Beverly Hills to shop with us were from San Marino. I saw it as an opportunity to launch something new in a new town.”
David Orgell San Marino sells a wide variety of luxury gifts, including home décor, office items, antique silver, and fine jewelry and watches. It carries high-end brands such as Christofle, Hermes, and William Yeoward, and prices start at $25, making the store a one-stop shop for all gifting needs.
“People have always known us for great holiday, wedding and engagement gifts,” said Soltani. “We source items from all over, including a lot of antique silver. Spencer Orgell was a silversmith back in England, so silver is still a big part of our business. David Orgell has always been known for luxury, but our luxury starts at $25 so you can still buy something really nice. We have a lot of fun stuff here—we mix the old with the new, the wild with traditional.”
David Orgell San Marino also does corporate gifts, and offers the brand’s signature giftwrapping services to customers, along with pre-wrapped gifts. The number one-selling item this year was the Reed & Barton Crystal Equinox Bowl, and the store consistently sells a lot of crystal items and barware, which have proven to be two of the most popular categories among its shoppers. Soltani has also added a few new categories to his inventory, including stationery and baby gifts.
“I started to carry items that I wouldn’t have before, like children’s dolls,” he pointed out. “Every day, I would see kids going to Julienne next door to eat lunch with their parents or grandparents, so I started to put dolls in the window. How can a grandmother resist buying a doll that her grandchild is rushing to grab?”
Soltani updated the store’s website in July so customers around the world can access his inventory but it is the relationships he has built with customers over the years that he values most about his business. He is proud of the fact that previous customers from Beverly Hills and the West Side continue to call him direct on his cell phone to ask for gift recommendations.
“I’ve been doing this since I was 17, and 30 years later I still love it,” Soltani said. “I love meeting and speaking with customers, and the friendships that I have gained over the years. It means a lot that they trust my judgment when giving gifts to their loved ones. I love being a part of this community. There’s a great sense of family here, and it’s wonderful seeing the same customers come back into our store and getting to know them and their families better.”
