A tradition at South Pasadena Middle School for at least three decades, Design an Ad encourages students to create their own advertisements in competition for the Most Outstanding Design award. The South Pasadena Review presents the ads to the merchants and business owners, who then choose the ad they feel is the standout design. This add is then featured in The Review during the month of May. Denise Tanaka, visual arts teacher at SPMS, used the opportunity in her arts classes to teach advertisement design and how to create an effective composition. The students spent two weeks designing their adds in class and the winners will be revealed at SPMS Open House on May 22. The funding that would go to The Review is donated to the visual arts classes as a way to provide funding for arts supplies. This year, Tanaka hopes to purchase a button maker to craft a lesson where students design empowering messages and turn them into buttons.
