So Pas Middle School to Screen “May I Be Happy”
January 25 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The South Pasadena Middle School PTA will host a free screening of the documentary film “May I Be Happy” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25 in the South Pasadena Middle School (SPMS) auditorium. The screening is open to the public and reservations are recommended.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion on mindfulness featuring Dr. Tina Bradley Trujillo, a local psychologist who practices mindfulness-based therapy, as well as Marengo Elementary School mindfulness trainers Christine Chin and Kristen Pittman, who will be available to answer questions.
The internationally award-winning 79-minute documentary closely follows the mindfulness experiences of students and teachers of all grade levels from elite private schools and public schools, on the streets and in juvenile detention centers. The producers, Eric Georgeault and Helene Walter, dedicated a year of their time and personal resources to craft the film.
SPMS PTA has marked January as Mindfulness and Wellness month. Shang Hur, vice president of programs at SPMS PTA, said mindfulness is part of a growing movement to reduce stress and anxiety as well as increase focus in an age where students can feel pressured by social media, expectations, drugs, alcohol and other issues.
“Due to that growth, we realized this really applies to how to deal with the issues we’re dealing with,” said Hur.
Hur shared that many SPUSD teachers and parents are working to integrate mindfulness practices into campuses, and the evening will serve as another connection point for creating communal conversations.
“It’s a solution and a calming way to help students,” said Hur.
The screening is part of an ongoing program.i be happy
