Tween Knitting Series
October 5, 2018 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Tweens, ages 10 to 14 years-old, will have an opportunity to learn to knit and to help newborns in the Library’s Fall Tween Series. Volunteers from the South Pasadena Senior Center will be teaching the students how to knit scent catcher squares, which will then be donated to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) department of Huntington Memorial Hospital. Each family will be given two scent catchers—one that stays with the baby and one that goes home with the mother, and then each day the squares will be traded back and forth, allowing both mother and child to be surrounded by each other’s scent until they can be reunited the next day. Sharing these familiar smells helps support the important bonding that takes place in the first days and weeks of a baby’s life even if they must be kept in the NICU as they grow stronger. This partnership program between the South Pasadena Public Library, the South Pasadena Senior Center, and the Huntington Memorial Hospital is funded by a grant from the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library.
