So Pas High School girls varsity soccer coach Tory Lathrop is shooting for the stars with her team. She’s convinced this team can go all the way to a division title.
In getting ready for the upcoming slate of Rio Hondo League competition, Lathrop highlighted the storied past of the South Pasadena High School girls soccer team’s successes, including a dozen league championships and three CIF-SS division titles.
Lathrop is convinced that embracing the past will help her squad excel this upcoming season. They finished the preseason at 7-2, with their first real test coming against San Marino on Saturday, Jan. 5.
Prior to all of that, however, Lathrop hosted an alumni game so the girls could get a glimpse of the past successes and hopefully build on that for this season.
“We believe that understanding and respecting our history as a program can only help us to continue to grow as a team and provide an atmosphere where our female athletes can thrive on the soccer pitch as well as in the classroom,” Lathrop said in an email to The Review. “We are so proud of all our alumni and what they have accomplished since graduating from college; successful careers, families and more. It’s great having many of them still in the area and right in their home town of South Pasadena as a support group for our current teams. We hope to see more of them return to share in this event with us in the future.”
The alumni game was last Friday, Dec. 28, and those that participated represented 12 league championships and three CIF-SS Division Titles.
“Though it was a small group, those in attendance represented a storied program history, that includes 12 league championships and three CIF-SS division titles,” Lathrop said. “Alumni players represented the classes of: 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2018 alongside future Tiger graduates. It was a wonderful evening of catching up with old friends and sharing the history of our program with each other.”
The alumni players that participated were: Cassie Zappaterreno, 1991; Crystal Crockett, 1996; Siobhan Donovan, 1996; Shari Sakamoto Grubbs, 1997; Meghan Donovan Kiser, 1999; Harper Fox, 2018; Emily Dunn, 2018; Sophie Reynolds, 2018; and Riley Segal, 2018.
Former coach Tom Ashby also participated and his tenure was from 1997 to 2004.
