In lieu of the usual in-person event, the South Pasadena Tournament of Roses is turning to a virtual fundraiser to help the organization prepare for the 2022 Rose Parade.
The SPTOR is bringing its annual Crunch Time Party online this month, from 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, through 10 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29. The organization has a fundraising target of $30,000 for that four-day auction.
“Our Crunch Time Party has always been on Dec. 29, no matter the day of the week, and it always ends at 10 o’clock,” explained Brant Dunlap, president of the SPTOR. “Although our usual event won’t take place, our committee is excited to roll out a fun way in which people can support our float.”
Funds raised will help pay for the 2022 float — which would have gone this year but for the canceled parade. Floats typically cost between $80,000 and $100,000, the organization said.
This year’s virtual auction will feature dozens of items, including a gourmet dinner for eight, a private airplane ride for two, a Big Bear getaway, an overnight stay at a high-end hotel, an elegant estate tour, dinners, gift baskets and various entertainment events. Former South Pasadena mayor Odom Stamps is offering a private bourbon tasting for four to six people, while another party is offering a yacht party.
“A lot of people have really stepped up and said ‘we can do this’ or ‘we can do that’ this year,” Dunlap noted. “Our local community has been very supportive of us even during one of the most difficult years in our lives. We are ever grateful to those who were able to give this year. We are also very thankful to those who could not this year due to COVID-19, but have supported our past events.”
