The results of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) testing conducted in April showed seven and five percent increases in English/Language Arts and Mathematics testing, respectively. The California Department of Education on Tuesday released the detailed 2016-2017 results for students in grades three through eight. These results place South Pasadena students in the top five of all K-12 unified school districts in California.

“Our students are continuously improving,” said Christiane Gervais, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services, South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD). “Strong academic growth and student progress is indicative of an educational system that is working well. Our exemplary teachers are helping students meet and exceed California standards in their classrooms, and with the help of supportive parents, administrators and staff, students are seeing positive results.”

The assessments for ELA and mathematics are based on California’s challenging academic standards, which include the ability to write clearly, think critically and solve problems. 2016-2017 district-wide results show that 84 percent of students met or exceeded ELA standards and 79 percent of students met or exceeded Math standards (an increase from the prior year in both ELA and math).

“We are seeing year-over-year success with CAASPP testing for our students,” said SPUSD Superintendent Geoff Yantz. “Our team of teachers, staff, administrators, and parents ensure that students are learning and excelling in the state standards. District-wide, strategic goals keep us focused on the best ways for students to succeed, and we’re experiencing terrific results.”

In July, parents and guardians received individual student score reports. The reports detail an overall score for each subject and information for how each child performed in different skill areas associated with English language arts/literacy and mathematics. If a child tested in 2015 and 2016, the score report presents three years of data, which allows parents and guardians to view a child’s progress over time.
