After ten years as a physician at Kaiser, Dr. Roberto Tostado became disillusioned with the health care system and decided to venture out on his own. Along with his wife Teresa, a nurse practitioner, Dr. Tostado opened The iBody Medical Wellness Center—which has transformed the lives of thousands of men and women by preventing and reversing their “mainly metabolic” diseases with proprietary holistic protocols.

“It was during my last two years at Kaiser when I realized that I no longer wanted to manage disease, as we have been trained to do in traditional medicine,” said Dr. Tostado. “It really became a crisis for me because I felt that I was doing more harm than good, even though I felt I was a good doctor. I wanted to learn how to heal patients—it was time for me to take that leap of faith and move forward with what my intuition was telling me. That’s how the whole evolution started and continued to morph into what we are today.”

When the Tostados first opened their clinic in Pasadena in 2005, they started out as a med spa, offering aesthetic services such as Botox, fillers, and laser therapies. The practice evolved to become more focused on wellness and started helping patients reverse illnesses, balance hormones, and lose weight.

“When you come in, we do a full assessment of the body and perform comprehensive lab work,” said Teresa. “If you have diabetes, we focus on reversing it whether it’s through nutrition, weight loss, hormone balancing—or all of the above. If somebody is otherwise healthy but has trouble keeping the weight off, then we help them figure out why. Our approach is focusing on getting the body well.”

“The blood tests that we do here are more sensitive than traditional blood tests,” added Dr. Tostado. “They get into inflammation markers, toxicity markers, and the true blood cholesterol tests we need to understand what’s going on with your body. We establish your physiological blueprint to help us individualize our treatments for you so that we can approach your needs from a comprehensive standpoint. We started coming up with our own detox formulations, focusing on things like bioidentical hormones and supervised weight loss. The whole point is to educate people so that they understand that being healthy doesn’t mean being on a restrictive diet endlessly. We tell people you don’t have to diet to lose weight and you don’t have to diet to be healthy—you have to learn how to eat.”

The detoxification program, which focuses on cleaning the liver, is based on the three basic principles of body purification to help remove toxins and restore healthy elimination; nourish the body and replenish nutritional deficiencies; and reset the body’s dependence on sugars and stimulants for energy. The detox program, which was developed jointly by Dr. Tostado and Teresa, is available in 3-day, 14-day, and 21-day cleanses that incorporate detox shakes and supplements taken throughout the day with unlimited eating of wholesome foods while avoiding processed foods, stimulants, and the most common allergy and inflammation-producing foods.

“It takes about three weeks to break bad habits and form new habits, so the 21 Day Cleanse is one that I advise everyone to do a minimum of once every six months,” said Dr. Tostado. “Cleaning the liver is like changing the filter on a car so that the body runs more efficiently. One of the side effects is that you’re going to get healthier and look better.”

After treating andropause in middle-aged and older men for many years, and then seeing a marked uptick in cases of erectile dysfunction along with low libido, low energy, and low confidence in male patients—even as young as their 20s and 30s—Dr. Tostado developed The iBody Elite Man Program to help restore patients’ sex drives and health by eliminating toxins and balancing hormones. As a result, he has helped countless men reverse their erectile disorders and experience renewed vitality. He has also developed a similar protocol for women, which also employs the three-tiered approach of eliminating endocrine-disrupting toxins, normalizing fat metabolism and increasing fat burning, and balancing hormone levels with plant-based bioidentical hormones that address the symptoms and help prevent metabolic disease.

Stem cell therapy is another specialty, which involves extracting stem cells from fat after performing Smartlipo Body Sculpting on patients, and then processing and systemically reintroducing stem cells through an IV. For patients with joint issues or bad knees, Dr. Tostado will introduce the stem cells via an injection directly to the affected joint to increase the quantity of stem cells in that particular area.

“Inflammation is the underlying reason that people develop disease, and stem cells go wherever there is injury or inflammation,” he explained. “We’ve had people with chronic paint notice significant improvement weeks or months later. We consider it anti-aging from within your own body, literally.”

In addition to wellness services, The iBody also continues to offer its aesthetic treatments such as laser therapies, hair regeneration, PRP treatments, Botox, fillers, and Smartlipo Body Sculpting.

In February, Dr. Tostado published his new book, wtf* is wrong with our health? A Rebel Physician’s Manifesto for Reversing Disease and Increasing Smiles, which covers whole-foods nutrition, thinking less toxic thoughts, and learning how to lead a healthier and more fulfilling life.

“I enjoy the patients because they become our friends throughout the process of their transformation,” Teresa said. “Our practice is not your regular doctor’s practice—you won’t ever see someone in the waiting room because we know how to pace our time with everyone. No one ever feels hurried here, and we hold their hands all the way through the program until they graduate. Because we’ve gotten them to the point where they can go for the rest of their life and know how to eat with a mindset of being healthy, we truly feel that we have impacted their lives in a positive day.”

Added Dr. Tostado, “Seeing the evolution of our patients is so satisfying because people will come in here distraught, distressed and slumped over, but as they go through the process here, they start to stand up straighter, they’re smiling more, and they start going through this transformation. Then when you see them at the end, they’re a new robust person and that’s the most satisfying thing, when you put a smile on someone’s face. My mission is to empower people to help them regain control of their life, health, and happiness.”
