Since 1942, Chuck’s Appliance Service Inc. has been providing the community with appliance repair services. The business was originally located off of Washington Boulevard in Northeastern Pasadena, but in 1991 it was relocated to its current location along Fair Oaks Avenue in South Pasadena. It is owned by Paul Asuncion, who purchased Chuck’s Appliance Service Inc. in 2013 from the previous owner, Scott Fraser.

“Originally, Scott’s father and a friend of his bought the business from a guy named Chuck,” Asuncion said. “Scott was one of my father’s friends and about 12 years ago I came in to interview for a management job here — now I own the place. We’re happy to be in South Pasadena. This city tends to stick together and we have a lot of good patrons here. We appreciate all the support from the city and our customers.”

Chuck’s Appliance Service Inc. offers a wide variety of appliance repairs for the kitchen and laundry room, including washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, built-in ovens and cooktops, dishwashers, wall heaters, as well as window and wall air conditioning units. The business also restores vintage stoves, which can be found in many homes in South Pasadena and the surrounding areas.

“If you treat them right, those stoves will last a long time,” said Asuncion. “Typically, they’ve lasted longer than their owners. A lot of the stoves from the 1940s and 1950s are still around, and many of our customers in South Pasadena, San Marino and Highland Park have those types of stoves. We mostly do restorations of vintage stoves by O’Keefe & Merritt as well as Wedgewood. We also sell and service all of those appliances.”

Customers can also bring in items such as stand-alone ice makers, microwaves, portable dishwashers and air conditioners to be repaired, but Chuck’s Appliance Service Inc. doesn’t fix smaller appliances, such as vacuum cleaners and toaster ovens because it doesn’t stock parts for those items. Asuncion has a team of technicians working for him that are always out in the field, many of whom his customers know by name.

“Our technicians are vetted and they’ve worked here for a long time,” he pointed out. “I’m happy sending customers the person they request or someone competent that they can trust in their home. If there’s ever an issue, we try to take care of it immediately. Being a small business, you have to do that because reputation is everything.”

While Chuck’s Appliance Service Inc.’s main focus is on South Pasadena and the neighboring cities, it does service areas that are farther away such as West Hollywood, Covina and Sunland-Tujunga. The storefront also has a retail showroom and pulls various items from major distributors several times a week to accommodate sales and customers that want products quickly installed in their homes.

“If we don’t have an item on display, I encourage our customers to go to a major appliance store and check out the product they are interested in,” said Asuncion. “After they call me with the model number, if it’s in stock at the distribution center I can usually have it here within a day or two, then we can deliver and install it in their home. We’re pretty confident that we can match or beat the prices at other stores.”

While many appliance repair stores have gone out of business over the years, one of the reasons that Chuck’s Appliance Service Inc. has remained in demand is because it has become a trusted resource for customers.

“We try to steer people in the right direction,” Asuncion pointed out. “If I don’t believe you should invest your money in an appliance, I’ll advise looking into getting a new unit as opposed to throwing your money in a pit. It all depends on the situation but we help our customers make the best choices based on their needs.”

With summer coming to an end, Asuncion recommends checking on your oven to make sure that it is working. Chuck’s Appliance Service Inc. also offers oven repairs and installations, and it’s good to start servicing them several weeks in advance before the holidays.

“What’s great about owning this business is that I get to meet a lot of different people, have a lot of conversations with customers and interact with the community,” Asuncion said. “A lot of people know about us through word of mouth, and I get a lot of referrals from my good customers. I find satisfaction in being here and knowing that people need our services. The phone keeps ringing and people want to come to us, which is nice. They know that we’re here for them and we’re very lucky to be in demand.”

Chuck’s Appliance Service Inc. is located at 917 Fair Oaks Ave in South Pasadena. It is open Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on Saturday by appointment only. For more information, call (626) 792-1231 or visit
